Supply Basics & Top Producers

Top Stainless Steel Flat Product Producers

In the flat products market, the Europeans regained some ground in 2010 but were unable to regain the top positions in our ‘Top 20’ ranking. Posco has taken the leading position in flat products from Tisco who was ahead in 2009.

Posco (4 plants), Shanxi TISCO (2 plants) and Yusco (2 plants) were the biggest in 2010 followed by the Europeans headed by TK Stainless (9 plants).

Top Stainless Steel Long Product Producers

In the long products market segment, the mostly unknown Chinese producer Tsingshan  is volume-wise the biggest producer in the world. But based on revenues, the No. 1 position is for sure taken by the Schmolz + Bickenbach Group, which ranks No. 2 based on volume terms. No.3 is Taiwan’s Walsin Lihwa Group which maintains 3 plants in China. The fast growing Indian producer Viraj is already bigger in output than most European mills.

There is no U.S. based mill big enough to make it into this ranking anymore.
